To Rent or Not to Rent… Textbooks

Renting Textbooks… if you’re currently enrolled in college or university, chances are you have heard the buzz on campus about the ability to rent your college textbooks. Since the student loans you take out have just as much to do with textbooks as they do with tuition, we thought we’d peer into this option a bit deeper.

Sites like chegg.com and bookrenter.com, allow college students to rent the textbooks they need for courses instead of having to shell out the dough for them each and every semester. The question we had here at studentloansforcollege.com was, “is renting textbooks really any better than buying used and/or selling off textbooks at the end of the semester?”

According to an article on the site poorerthanyou.com, the views on renting textbooks for college are mixed. The author of the article reviewed a few textbooks of her own (seeing what the costs would be for renting, renting from her schools local program and purchasing) and the results seemed to favor the renting (when it came to the cash)…

Fundamentals of Financial Management, Concise Edition
Bookstore used: $95.50
Bookmaid: $40 – $85
Chegg rental: $46.42

Internet Marketing and e-Commerce
Bookstore used: $107.25
Amazon.com used: $84 (with shipping)
Chegg rental: $51.61

In the long run renting textbooks will probably save you (the student) quite a bit of cash, but its important to weigh your options and do your research before you start. Know the company your renting from, seek reviews from students who have rented from that company in the past, and decide if the textbook is something you are going to want to reference after the course is over.
