Student Loans: Full vs. Part Time Students

student loansQ: I have a question regarding terms of PLUS student loans, can the terms of these type of student loans change if I were to cut back on course load (drop to a part time college student)?

A: Great student loan question and one that I actually have personal experience with. In my last year of college I dropped down to a part time college student, and my parents began receiving bills for the PLUS student loans they had taken out. So to answer your question, the terms of your PLUS student loans do not change; it’s just that most do not read the terms of the student loans closely enough.

The reason my parents began receiving bills for my student loans was because I had dropped down to a part time college student, and the terms of the student loans stated that the student loans would only be “deferred” for full time college students.

Often times being a full time student vs. a part time will effect the deferment of your student loans, this is why it’s very important to know the terms of your student loans before making the choice to cut your course load.
