The Ron Brown Scholarship Program offers college scholarships to African-American high school seniors that excel academically, exhibit leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. The Ron Brown Scholarship Program awards ten to twenty students (each year) with a $40000 college scholarship (awarded in $10000 annual increments). Scholarship recipients may use the scholarship to attend any accredited four-year college or university within the United States, and are not limited to any specific field or academic discipline.
Ron Brown Scholarship Program applicants must be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card. Applicants must be high school seniors, current college students are not eligible to apply. Scholarship finalists are invited to participate in a weekend selection process in Washington, D.C. at the expense of the Ron Brown Scholar Fund. Finalists are interviewed by members of the Ron Brown Selection Committee and scholarship winners are selected on the basis of their applications, interviews and participation in selection weekend activities.
