Q: I have a question about the Pell Grant eligibility requirements. If my family does not make that much money and my FAFSA EFC is zero, will I be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, and how much money will I get from the Pell Grant?
A: If you have an EFC of zero, you should be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, assuming you meet all other Pell Grant eligibility requirements. Federal Pell Grants are typically only awarded to students who have not yet earned a bachelor’s or a professional degree. If you have a zero EFC and are enrolled as a fulltime student, you should receive the maximum Federal Pell Grant amount of $5550, again assuming you meet all the Pell Grant eligibility requirements. The amount of money a student receives from a Federal Pell Grant is determined by EFC, cost of attendance, and enrollment status. To apply for a Federal Pell Grant, students must submit a FAFSA.
Students that have a zero EFC may also be eligible for a SEOG Grant, which is offered to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Students should submit a FAFSA to apply for Federal grants (including the Pell and SEOG), and then contact the financial aid representative at their school for specific questions regarding their Pell Grant eligibility or award amount.
