National Student Loan Database

Q: What is the national student loan database? I was told I can use the national student loan database to find the information I need regarding paying back my student loans.

A: The National Student Loan Data System (or the NSLDS) is the U.S. Department of Education’s database for student aid. Depending on what type of student loans an individual has (private student loans or federal student loans) they may be able to utilize the National Student Loan Data System to view information regarding their student loans. The National Student Loan Data System can only be used to view federal student loan information (and federal grant information), an individual’s private student loan information will not be included. Through the National Student Loan Data System individuals will be able to view the status of their federal loans, as well as any outstanding balances on their federal student loans.

To obtain access to the National Student Loan Data System, and view information on your federal student loans, you will need to create Personal Identification Number (PIN), which can be done at the National Student Loan Data System’s website. For individuals who also have private student loans, the National Student Loan Data System will not display any information pertaining to private student loans. If you have questions regarding repayment of your private student loans, you will need to contact the private student loan lender or private student loan holder directly.
