I Need A Student Loan Now

Q: I am half way through my college semester and have discovered that I need more student loans for living expenses and other school related expenses. What do I do if I need a student loan now?

A: If the money you have received from FAFSA (federal student loans and grants), private grants and/or scholarships is not sufficient enough to cover your college expenses, you could consider a private student loan. Private student loans can be used to cover college related expenses in the same way that federal student loans can be used. However, keep in mind that private student loans are based upon credit, and do not typically offer better interest rates than federal student loans.

If you “need a student loan now” private student loans have no deadline for when you can apply. If you are considering a private student loan make certain to do your research. Compare a few different private student loan lenders and their products to make certain you are getting the best possible deal. If you cannot secure a private student loan on your own, you may want to consider applying for the loan with a creditworthy cosigner. Applying with a cosigner can help you secure the loan, and could even get you a better interest rate.
