Do All Foreign Schools Offer Federal Financial Aid

Q: Do all foreign schools offer federal financial aid?

A: Although many students assume that all colleges and universities offer federal financial aid, not all schools do. In order for any school to offer Federal Financial Aid, the school must be accredited by an agency (recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education), and be eligible to participate in federal student aid programs, thus Federal Financial Aid is available only to students attending eligible institutions.

If you need to find out if the school or university you are attending, or wish to attend, offers Federal Financial Aid, you can call the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) toll free to find out if a school is eligible: 800-4-FED-AID (800-433-3243). Keep in mind that, U.S. Federal Financial Aid at international institutions is available only in the form of Stafford and PLUS student loans. Also, if your school doesn’t participate in the federal program, you can not apply for a private student loans instead. All schools must be approved by the Department of Education to offer most private student loans.
