We all know that student loan debt can be difficult to cope with, regardless of what kind of student loans you have taken out. However, for borrowers of private student loans dealing with loan debt the road can be extra rough, given that there are not nearly as many repayment options or relief programs (in comparison to federal student loans).
Is there debt relief programs for private student loan borrowers?
There is no encompassing debt relief program for private student loan borrowers. Because private student loans are not regulated in the same way that federal student loans are, each private student loan comes with it’s own terms and options, which can make private student loan debt more difficult to deal with. In addition, there is no specific federal law that requires private loan creditors to offer relief.
What if I am having trouble with my private student loan debt?
If you are having trouble with your private student loan debt, you should first, review (or request) your private student loan agreement. Your private student loan agreement will outline any types of debt relief options or programs promised by the lender for your specific private student loan.
If your lender does not seem to offer any debt relief programs or help, the next step would be to contact your private student loan lender, and try to negotiate a more suitable repayment plan and/or other loan modifications to better help you.
