State Financial Aid
State Financial Aid for College...Just as there is federal financial aid for college, each state also offers different forms of state financial aid for college in the form of student loans, grants, scholarships, prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs.
Just as you must file FAFSA for federal financial aid for college, most states also require you to file the FAFSA form for consideration of state aid programs. Essentially by filing your FAFSA, you kill two birds with one stone. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they will simply forward your information on the FAFSA to your states student financial assistance agency.
It is extremely important to note that each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline, and if you miss this deadline you will NOT be eligible to receive ANY state financial aid for the entire academic year.
If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines (other than Michigan).
After filing your FAFSA by the state deadline, you may also be required to fill out additional forms, or submit additional information, which is why it is important for you to contact your State Higher Education Agency to make sure you have all your bases covered.
