Typically most college students use private student loans as a way to cover educational expenses that are not covered by their federal student loans. There are a few reasons why private student loans are more expensive than federal student loans, the first being that federal student loans are able to offer fixed interest rates that are lower than the variable rates offered by most private student loans. Second, federal student loans (because they are government regulated) are able to offer college students better repayment and forgiveness options then private student loans. There are different types of private student loans, and often times private student loans vary with each lender, so it’s a good idea to check around and do your research when in the market for private student loans. For example some private student loan lenders will offer private student loans in excess of the cost of attendance, offer non-school-certified private student loans, and offer different private student loans depending on the college student's level of study. It is important that before applying for private student loans, that you determine your needs, and then check out your options.
