Federal Student Loans

Now that we have determined what federal student loans are, and what types of federal student loans are offered, we can learn what makes them different from private student loans.

The largest differences between federal student loans for college and private student loans for college is that federal student loans have lower interest rates then private student loans, do not require credit checks, and often times provide a wider variety of deferment options and extended repayment terms. Because of all of the above reasons, college students should max out federal student loan options (and other free money for college options) first, and then supplement what the federal student loans will not cover with private student loans (alternative student loans).

There are a wide selection of private student loans out there for college students, and chances are you will need to supplement your federal student loans with private student loans (the majority of college students do), for the fact that college expenses roam well beyond the cost of tuitions.

However do not make the mistake of failing to check out your smartest student loan options first. Many college students make the mistake of not appreciating or taking into consideration things such as "interest rates" or "repayment terms", but these are stipulations which will effect you greatly when you are finished with your college education and repayment of your student loans become a reality.
